The forerunner of the Guge dynasty was the "great garuda" of the Zhang-zhung. The gold of Guge and the garuda of Zhang-zhung became the golden-winged garuda of Tibet. Another aspect of this primal belief in a garuda-like deity can be seen in the Tibetan custom of "sky burial." When a person dies, he is carried back to heaven on a great bird's wings. The gold-winged garuda is also none other than the feng-huang bird told of in many Chinese stories.

In nearly all the world's traditional cultures, there are tales of something like a phoenix. In the Mediterranean region there is a divine bird called the phoenix or "bird of life." Its color is like resplendent sunlight; its eyes flash fire; and its head emits a halo-a sign of the sun god in ancient pictures. The sun also plays a role in the death and rebirth of the phoenix. Sometimes the sun ignites the firewood that consumes the phoenix; sometimes the phoenix dies and is reborn on the sun's altar.

"I do not agree with certain negativistic ways of describing our world", such as "this horrible world of defilements" or "a world in the grip of chaos." Without muck a lotus cannot grow; muck is the proving ground of a lotus. To demonstrate character in this world you need a lotus' way of thinking, but for going back to heavenly origins you need a pair of wings like the phoenix. Thus I propose that all ought to have lotus consciousness and phoenix behavior.
